At the start of this millenium, a lot of (emerging) r&b/soul artists hungered for the early style soul music of Tamla/Motown and Stax/Atlantic. Artists like Mayer Hawthorne, Raphael Saadiq, Jamie Lidell, Nick Waterhouse and even R. Kelly started to emulate the genre, thus bringing back the happy sounding soul. And don’t forget the late Amy Winehouse with Back To Black, who brought this sound to the mainstream with help from Mark Ronson.
Not only the ‘young artists’ began making soul again: old souls like Lee Fields, Nicole Willis and Charles Bradley introduced themselves to soul aficionados at a relative old age. Making the circle complete: old and young souls making nostalgic soul music.
